Monte Rosso 2023 Estate Sémillon
Monte Rosso 2023 Estate Sémillon

"The Sémillon was planted in 1886, drawn from a 3.8-acre parcel divided into three sub-blocks. The grapes are picked on the earlier side and fermented entirely in barriques with native yeasts, then stirred on the lees towards the tail end of élevage, ageing for nine months prior to bottling. The style is resolutely old-school and very much aligned with Bernardino Sani’s philosophy at Argiano: earlier picking to emphasise freshness and savoury nuance, and to produce wines that age gracefully. A truly gorgeous wine. The vineyard was originally developed by the Goldstein family before being purchased by the Martini family in 1938, who renamed it Monte Rosso. This 2023 release marks the first vintage of Monte Rosso wines produced as a standalone brand from this iconic site, with total production currently around 800 cases. Perched high above Sonoma Valley, Monte Rosso Vineyard is defined by iron-rich red volcanic soils and fractured rhyolite at elevation, delivering some of California’s most powerful yet distinctly mineral-driven mountain fruit. (Drink between 2026-2036)" - Decanter, 95DE

"One of the Golden State’s greatest pockets of old vines is in the famed Monte Rosso vineyard in Sonoma’s Moon Mountain District. The 243-acre vineyard (the entire ranch totals 575 acres) has been the backbone of many long-lived Cabernets and intriguing Zinfandel-based field blends. It dates to the late 1800s, including a parcel of Sémillon (the only white variety in Monte Rosso) that was planted in 1886. That parcel, along with a few choice others, will now be the source for a new project called Monte Rosso Estate.

Estate director Diego Del Pino is overseeing the boutique operation that includes Argiano winemaker Bernardino Sani as well as Monte Rosso vineyard manager Juan Alonso. “I’ve always wanted to do something in California, but for me, old vines are critical, and it took me a while to find something" says Sani. "Monte Rosso is a special place in that regard."
