2013 Deovlet Pinot Noir, John Sebastiano Vineyard

"The 2013 Pinot Noir John Sebastiano Vineyard is one of the most aromatically expressive, flamboyant wines in this range. Then again, it's John Sebastiano. Rose petal, mint, crushed flowers and sweet raspberries take on silky shades of expression and nuance in this undeniably attractive, irresistible Pinot from Ryan Deovlet. (Drink between 2015-2021)" -Vinous, 93VM

"The 2023s from Ryan Deovlet are a beautiful representation of the cool, prolonged growing season, transparently capturing each site with a consistently understated yet detailed style. As ever, the concise lineup centers on Burgundian varieties sourced from Zotovich, La Encantada and Sanford & Benedict, complemented by Bordeaux-variety bottlings from Happy Canyon. For the wines from Sta. Rita Hills, Deovlet contrasts several of his contemporaries by accentuating differences between sites through a tailored approach for each wine rather than treating each vineyard symmetrically. Pinot Noir fermentations are native, and extraction is gentle, relying more on pump-overs rather than punch-downs. The Zotovich and Sanford & Benedict sites ferment with around one-third whole-cluster retention and analogous percentages of new 228-liter barrels from Billon and Chassin, respectively. The La Encantada is fermented with fewer whole clusters and matures in neutral 500-liter barrels. The Pinot Noirs spend 16-18 months in barrel, except for the Zotovich bottling, which is aged for 12 months before finishing maturation in sandstone amphora.
The Chardonnays are whole-cluster pressed to tank and barrel fermented with a mix of ambient and selected yeasts. The Zotovich bottling is matured in 300-liter cigar barrels, while the Sanford & Benedict matures in Stockinger foudre and large-format barrels, with any new wood used sourced from Damy. The excellent Pinot Blanc bottling from La Encantada is fermented in tank and aged in a mix of sandstone amphora and stainless barrels. The concise selection of Bordeaux varieties undergoes gentle extractions with judicious oxygenation, with the Sonny Boy Merlot mirroring the Zotovich Pinot Noir in its combination of maturation in barrels followed by finishing in sandstone, while the Star Lane Cabernet ages in a mix of terra cotta cigars and new barrels from Atelier, undergoing four rackings during élevage." - Wine Advocate, NOV 2025
