2018 Manqué Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru
"Beautifully layered, the 2018 Manqué offers rich, ripe currant fruit alongside black tea and bergamot notes. There’s impressive density and a compact structure to the tannins, complemented by nuances of walnut and a potpourri of dried florals. It’s a quintessential Dave Phinney wine—bold, textural, and glorious within that frame. Rich and full-bodied, it finishes with savoury, meaty depth and persistence. This is the third vintage of Phinney’s négociant project for Mazis-Chambertin; Manqué is slang for “the underdog." -Decanter, 94DE
Mazis-Chambertin, one of the smallest and most prestigious Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits region of the Gevrey-Chambertin AOC, has shallow, clay limestone soils planted entirely to Pinot Noir. Spring frost kicked off the 2017 growing season, damaging some vines in parts of Burgundy. Summer, however, was mostly warm and dry with the occasional rainfall and a few days of heat spikes, resulting in ripe and fleshy wines of high quality.
