"The compelling Conti Costanti 2021 Brunello captivates with pronounced aromas of fragrant purple flower, eucalyptus, Mediterranean brush and perfumed berry. All about class and extreme finesse, the elegant palate delivers succulent wild raspberry, crushed Marasca cherry, spiced orange zest and star anise set against a backbone of fine-grained tannins. Fresh acidity lends balance and great intensity. Year after year Andrea Costanti turns out what are among the very best wines from Montalcino, and the 2021 is no exception, it’s an absolute stunner with great aging potential." -Kerin O'Keefe, 99KO
Conti Costanti is no lightweight Brunello, as Antonio Galloni of Vinous noted: "I have long thought of Costanti as a top ten estate in Montalcino, but I am now convinced this property could belong in the top five." The Costanti family has owned land in Montalcino since the 16th century, making them one of the longest-established families in the village, but the winery was founded in the 19th century, making it one of Montalcino’s most historic estates. Costanti’s soils are lean, Cretaceous marls, with vines that grow on southeast-facing slopes at 440m above sea level (an altitude once considered the limit for Sangiovese ripening, but in an era of global warming is proving ideal). Each year they compete directly against their neighbor, Biondi Santi, for wine of the vintage (at a fraction of the price), with their 2021 Brunello also topping Kerin O'Keefe's wines of the vintage list. Her summary of it's majesty was consise: "Year after year Andrea Costanti turns out what are among the very best wines from Montalcino, and the 2021 is no exception, it’s an absolute stunner".
