The Hilt

The Hilt champions pinot noir and chardonnay from the climatic margins of California's coastal winegrowing regions, Santa Barbara County's Sta. Rita Hills and Santa Maria Valley AVAs prominent among them.  The philosophy of "growing in the margins" propels winegrowers to employ practices that enable grapes to show full transparency of site-key to The Hilt's philosophy.  The Hilt and Jonata are owned by Ann and Stan Kroenke.

2013 The Hilt Pinot Noir, Sanford/Benedict Old Vines

The Hilt is the new venture by the family that owns Jonata and Screaming Eagle.  This wine is sourced 100% from the old vine section of the original Sta. Rita Hills vineyard – Sanford & Benedict.  Dark and vinous.  Driven by black fruit and spice, cigar and smoke. Loads of black licorice, cracked black pepper and black cherries.  These old vines give unique exotic aromas of wild fire, resin and cherry liquor and complex notes of dried leaves, baking spices and sage.  Enough fruit to stand up to the big and chalky tannins of the 2013 vintage.  This wine drinks beautifully now, but could also be aged for many years.

2014 The Hilt Pinot Noir, Radian/Bentrock Vineyard

The Hilt is the new venture by the family that owns Jonata and Screaming Eagle.  Black pepper spice aromas hit you right away followed by a touch of smoke and cherry.  These extreme-west vineyards give the wine unique flavors like cherry tart, smoke, spice and even more flavors unveil themselves as you sit with the glass for a while.  The complexity of this wine is stunning and will continue to evolve for many years to come.
